Police Intercept Guns Headed For Mexico

I don't like guns and never have. But I believe in the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Second Amendment to that constitution clearly gives Americans the right to own guns with reasonable limits (such as no criminal conviction). So don't misunderstand the following post. I do not believe Americans should be banned from gun ownership, but I do believe there should be some limits on what they can do with the guns they own.

For instance, American gun owners and dealers should not be allowed to ship those guns to a foreign country -- like Mexico. The Mexican drug cartels have recently been waging war with guns and even assault weapons that made their way into that country from the United States. The violence is threatening to spill over the border, and is being used as an excuse for many unconstitutional anti-immigrant laws. But the same people demanding these anti-immigrant laws seldom mention a major cause of the violence -- American guns being shipped south of the border.

Acting on a tip, Laredo police officers stopped a vehicle a couple of days ago. The contraband found in the vehicle amounted to one of the largest caches of illegal weapons they have discovered in years, and the weapons were headed to Mexico. Here is what they found:

147 brand new assault rifles

200 high-capacity magazines

53 bayonets

10,000 rounds of ammunition

That shipment of death was enough to start a small war all by itself. There does need to be some immigration reform in this country, but far more important is controlling and/or stopping the illegal shipment of military-style weapons to Mexico. For the good of both countries, the trafficking of weapons must be stopped.

The drug cartels are responsible for the upheaval and many deaths in Mexico, but the Americans who sold them the weapons they used must also accept some of the responsibility. Both deserve long prison sentences.
