What is it that gives "great meaning" to the lives of Americans? There are some -- those who want to convince you that the United States is a christian country -- that would have you believe religion is the thing that gives people meaning in their lives. But that is simply not the case.
The Pew Research Center asked Americans what gave them meaning in their lives, and religion did not finish well. Only 36% said it was their religious faith. That was only seventh place on the list of things giving the most meaning -- behind family, friends, being outdoors, caring for pets, listening to music, and reading.
The charts below show the percentage saying their religious faith gives them great meaning by race, age, and ideology.
