Donald Trump has been in office now (in his second term) for almost a full year. It has been an eventful year as he has done a lot of things that were not good for this country. But what was the worst thing he has done - the thing that was most damaging to the country?
He has continued to lie about nearly everything. His lies make it hard for many citizens to know what the truth is.
He has engaged in a massive display of greed and corruption. He has accepted gifts from foreign countries - gold, a crown, and an airplane worth billions - which he plans to keep once he leaves office. He has increased his own wealth by billions of dollars (and that of his family) by selling artifacts and by creating his own cryptocurrency. He has used his office to increase his wealth in a way no previous president has done.
Without permission from the GAO, Congress, or the American people, he demolished the East Wing of the people's White House. Now he plans to replace it with a massive $4 billion ballroom that will tower over the rest of the White House.
He has turned the Department of Justice (which was once dedicated to punishing those who would violate U.S. laws) into his own private vehicle for retribution of those he doesn't like - or who he views as political opponents.
Using immigration as an excuse, he has engaged in abject cruelty - separating families, sending immigrants (most of whom had committed no crime) to a foreign maximum security prison, arresting citizens because they were the wrong color and/or ethnicity, cancelling the legal status of immigrants (many of whom risked their lives to help us in Afghanistan), and stopping all immigration from nonwhite countries.
He has cancelled D.E.I. and affirmative action programs in the government, and pressured private businesses to do the same, in an effort to ensure rich white men remain in control of the government.
He has passed a bill giving huge tax cuts to the rich, while kicking millions off of Medicaid and killing ACA subsidies (which will insure many more are left without any health insurance.
He has trashed the economy by putting tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world. This has made sure inflation remains high and consumers must pay more for nearly everything - resulting in an economy that has become unaffordable for many citizens.
He has tried to destroy academic freedom on college campuses, and tried to censor the media.
He has cancelled many grants for research.
He has flouted international law by bombing small boats and killing those in them, and by seizing oil tankers belonging to another country.
All of the above are serious matters, and hurt the country and its citizens. But I believe there is something else that is even worse. He has ignored the Constitution and the rule of law. In doing this, he is trying to make himself more powerful and establish himself as an authoritarian ruler over the entire government. This is a direct attack on our democracy and the rights of all American citizens. If he is not stopped, we will be left with just a "pseudo-democracy" like those of Russia or Hungary.
