Pardon Of Arpaio Shows Disregard for Constitution & Law

Donald Trump's pardon of the bigot Joe Arpaio removes any doubt that Trump himself is a racist and a bigot. But more importantly, it also shows he has no regard for the courts, the rule of law, or the Constitution -- and that opens up the possibility that he might use his pardon power to protect himself and his family from the investigation into their criminality (collusion, fraud, money laundering, etc.). He could keep his aides from turning into government witnesses by promising them pardons.

The following is a thought-provoking article, written by Charles Kaiser, found at Moyers & Company:

Donald Trump’s pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio marks the real beginning of the coming constitutional crisis in America.
Trump started tweeting trial balloons about this a month ago —“all agree the US
— President has the complete power to pardon”– and he has even asserted the unlitigated idea that he can pardon himself. But what he did yesterday puts his presidency on a whole new plane: a Category 5 political hurricane. By pardoning a man convicted of criminal contempt for direct violation of a Federal order, Trump is now flaunting his eagerness to overturn the rule of law in America.
I have never seen anyone who has acted more obviously guilty than Donald Trump has almost every single day since he became president. From his tete-a-tete with James Comey, in which he asked the FBI director to end his investigation of Michael Flynn, to his firing of the same man when he failed to heed that warning, to his newly-reported phone call to North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis to complain about a bill that would protect special counsel Robert Mueller’s independence, the president has engaged in one blatant attempt to obstruct justice after another.
Here is the most logical way to view his pardon of Sheriff Arpaio: it is the latest and gravest step he has taken in his continuing efforts to undermine the rule of law. Obviously Trump delighted in fueling the racism of Arpaio’s supporters by pardoning this convicted criminal –he made that clear earlier this week during his repellent speech in Phoenix. But I am certain that is not the main reason for this heinous act.
For many weeks, Washington has been swirling with rumors that Mueller already has secured the cooperation of Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort in his investigation of the president. And Trump undoubtedly is more vulnerable to the testimony of these two men than he is to that of any other players in this fearful drama. Therefore, Trump must feel compelled to send this message through Arpaio’s pardon: the president is eager and willing to do the same thing for anyone who might be pressured into testifying against him.
I have a written a book about France under fascism, and what we are now experiencing is exactly what incipient fascism looks like. The combination of Trump’s relentless assaults on the free press, his open encouragement of Nazis — which is the only honest description of his initial refusal to condemn them — and now a pardon without even pretending to go through the normal channels of the Justice Department — these are all the acts of man who is blatantly defying his sacred pledge to uphold the Constitution of the United States.
Like the men and women of Vichy France who began their collaboration with the Nazis seventy-seven years ago, from now on, every senator and House member of either party who continues to remain silent about this president’s unconstitutional acts is directly complicit in the high crimes and misdemeanors of Donald Trump.
I know very serious students of American justice who already were convinced last night that the pardon of Arpaio has fatally undermined Robert Mueller’s investigation by killing the incentive for anyone to testify against this president. Personally, I am not yet that pessimistic.   I still believe that any pardon of Flynn or Manafort or Jared Kushner will produce a large enough firestorm to end Donald Trump’s presidency, either through impeachment or the 25th amendment to the Constitution, which would allow his removal by a majority vote of his cabinet.
But if there is a majority of Republican senators and House members who wish to avoid a full-blown constitutional crisis worse than anything we have seen since the secession of the Confederate states, they must speak loudly and act clearly right now. They must immediately pass the bill introduced by Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware and Republican Senator Tillis of North Carolina that would shore up the independence of the special prosecutor, and they must pass it with veto-proof majorities.
Senator Lindsay Graham already has said that the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions would mean the beginning of the end of Trump’s presidency. It is long past time for all of Graham’s colleagues in both houses to declare that the same thing will be true if the president dares to repeat the horrific abuse of his pardon power that we witnessed last night.   Otherwise, America is destined for an era of violence and darkness unlike any we have ever witnessed since the end of the Civil War, one hundred and fifty-two years ago.

It's Sycophancy - Not Loyalty

Trump Has Done Worse On Race Relations Than Others

Donald Trump is still saying he's a uniter -- someone able to bring all the races together in harmony. But the public doesn't believe him. In fact, they think he has done the worst job of trying to fix race relations than any of the last four president (Trump, Obama, Bush, and Clinton) -- significantly worse. In fact, he's the only president that has a majority of the population (59%) saying race relations have gotten worse under his "leadership".

This chart reflects results from a recent Politico / Morning Consult Poll -- done between August 17th and 19th of a random national sample of 1,987 registered voters, with a 2 point margin of error.

Democrats Trust The Media - Republicans Don't

I just found this Gallup Poll survey interesting. Since 2003, the trust in the media among Democrats has been growing (from 42% to 62), while trust has been going down among Republicans (from 35% to 14%). The trust among Independents has remained about the same (about 37%).

It seems that Republicans are buying the myth of "fake news", while Democrats are ready to defend the media (without which we wouldn't have a democracy).

It also shows that trust for the media increases with education, and newspapers are trusted more than TV, and TV is trusted more than the internet.

Results for this Gallup Poll are based on telephone interviews conducted March 9-29 and July 5-9, 2017, with a random sample of 1,810 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±3.

There May Be A Solution To The Confederate Statues

These charts are from the newest Public Policy Polling survey -- done between August 18th and 21st of a random national sample of 887 registered voters, with a margin of error of 3.3 points.

As the top chart shows, the general public is split on the appropriateness of statues in public places of Confederate military figures and politicians (39% support, 34% oppose, and 27% don't know what the hell to think). But when you look at the racial breakdown, you can see the problem this country has. Among Whites, about 49% support the monuments and 29% oppose them. It's different among Nonwhites -- Blacks (11% support and 49% oppose, Hispanics (3% support and 47% oppose), and other races (23% support and 44% oppose).

These monuments expose the racial problem we have in this country. Too many Whites still harboring racist views (shown by their support for monuments honoring those who who fought to keep slavery and white supremacy).

The second chart gives us a ray of hope. There seems to be a solution that a substantial majority of all races can agree upon -- moving the monuments out of the public square and into museums (where they can be displayed in a historical context). That would be supported by 57% of Whites, 63% of Blacks, 61% of Hispanics, and 55% of other races.

It's a compromise, but it's one I think most people could happily live with.

Trump Has A Black Friend!

The cartoon image above and the commentary below are both from one of my favorite political cartoonists -- Clay Jones at claytoonz.com. Mr. Jones writes:

Michael “The Black Man” is a ridiculous human being. Not so much for supporting Trump, though that’s ridiculous no matter which race you belong to.
Did you find it offensive that I referred to him as “The Black Man?” Don’t be. He has added that as part of his name. And, that’s not the most ridiculous part about the guy. It kinda make sense to use that name if you’re a black person attending a Trump rally, because in that scenario, you are THE black man.
Republicans have a problem when it comes to race. Maybe it’s because they engage in racist policies, like preventing minorities from voting. What they like to do is give the impression that they’re receiving support from minorities, so they always find that one guy to place behind whichever Republican is speaking.
The subject of Michael “The Black Man” was being discussed between me and a few of my colleagues. One of the more conservative ones didn’t realize that “The Black Man” is the gentleman’s tag of choice. My colleague saw me use it, and sarcastically said to me, “Yes, Clay. There’s only one person of color who supports Trump.” I replied, “let’s be fair. I’m sure there are dozens.” I speak fluent sarcasm.
“Dozens” of black supporters isn’t too far off. Minorities aren’t big fans of Donald Trump. Shocking. Mr. Black Man has been lampooned on The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update special. As it turns out, the man is a nut.
This person who was sitting behind Trump at the Arizona rally kept holding a sign that said “Blacks For Trump.” He was wearing a shirt that said, “TRUMP and Republicans are not racist.”
Michael has also used the names, Michael Symonette, Maurice Woodside and Mikael Israel. He once belonged to a violent black supremacist religious cult, and he runs a handful of amateur, unintelligible conspiracy websites. He has called Barack Obama “The Beast” and Hillary Clinton a Ku Klux Klan member. Oprah Winfrey, he says, is the devil. How can Oprah be the devil? She gives away cars.
He believes President Obama was endorsed by the KKK, who are actually the Cherokee. In the 1990s, he was charged, then acquitted, with conspiracy to commit two murders. He sounds like a fun guy to have at your next party. Just be warned, he may not leave.
You would think the Trump Campaign would have a better verification system for their tokens. But then again, the president doesn’t even check to make sure those tweets he keeps retweeting aren’t from White Supremacists and Nazis.
At least this time the person waving a “Blacks For Trump” sign wasn’t a white woman, as he’s had at past rallies.
I really hope that Michael “The Black Man” will eventually seek mental help. I hope the president joins him.
