Monday, the Texas Secretary of State made his final decision on how candidate names would appear on the ballot in the governor's race. The TSOS recognized "Kinky" as a nickname, and said Kinky would be listed on the ballot as Richard Kinky Friedman. This is a partial victory for Kinky, who wanted to be listed as Kinky Friedman. At least the name he's been known by for the last forty years will be on the ballot.
Grandma was the loser of the day. TSOS said she will go on the ballot as Carole Keeton Strayhorn, since the only place they could find the term "Grandma" was on her campaign literature. He ruled the term was a slogan, and not a nickname. He also pointed out that she has never had the term "Grandma" on the ballot in any previous elections. Of course, Grandma threw all common sense out the door and immediately said she would take the issue to court.
I hope she doesn't. This has gone on long enough. It's time to get down to some serious campaigning. If someone doesn't cut into Perry's lead pretty soon, it won't matter what anyone is called on the ballot.
Got to agree with the court on this one - until I read your blog, I didn't even know Kinky's real first name.
ReplyDeleteNow the real campaigns can begin.
