The number of corrupt Republican politicians seems to be endless. We already had the corruption of Tom DeLay, Duke Cunningham, Jack Abramoff, Bob Ney, and many of their underlings. Scooter Libby is still awaiting trial. Last week, we learned that Republican House leadership has been covering for a pedophile for several years. Now we have another name to add to the growing list of disgraced Republicans.
The Associated Press is reporting that a criminal investigation is in progress on Republican Representative Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania. Unidentified sources told the AP that the Washington and Philadelphia offices of the FBI are investigating Weldon under the direction of the Justice Department Public Integrity Unit. Weldon, who is running for his 11th term in Congress, denies any wrongdoing.
Weldon is being investigated for using his position as a member of the House of Representatives, to secure lobbying and consulting contracts for his daughter between 2002 and 2004. I guess Weldon thought the bribes wouldn't be noticed if they went to his daughter instead of himself. He was wrong.
Now Weldon must find his place in the long line of disgraced Republicans, but he shouldn't worry. It won't be long before another corrupt Republican pushes Weldon off the front pages. The only question is - who will it be?
