Fundamentalist Leader Paid For Gay Sex

It always seems that those who proclaim their piety the loudest are the ones hiding a secret life. Reverend Ted Haggard was the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, which represents 45,000 churches and 30 million members nationwide. He is also the minister for the 14,000 member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Haggard is one of those holier-than-thou preachers who would like to force the rest of us to follow his narrow-minded views. But even though he is a nut job, he is influential, and participates in a weekly meeting with the White House and other religious leaders.

His main claim to fame is his opposition to the gay lifestyle. He is actively supporting a ban on gay marriages that is on the ballot this year in Colorado. He has also taken church members to "minister" outside of gay bars. Now it looks like he may have just been checking out the scene.

A gay prostitute named Mike Jones has come forward saying he has had a three year sexual relationship with Reverend Haggard. Jones said they last got together in August of this year. Jones also accused Haggard of using methamphetamine during their sessions. Jones said he came forward because of Haggard's support for the ban on gay marriages.

Of course, Haggard has denied the accusations and said he's never been unfaithful to his wife. The only problem with that story is that Jones has kept several voice mails from Haggard on his phone answering machine, and still has two hundred dollar bills that Haggard gave him.

On thursday, Haggard stepped down as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, and stepped aside as pastor of his church, while still proclaiming his innocence.

It looks like he's been done in by his own hypocrisy.
