There aren't too many places where you can get decent customer service anymore, but this story takes poor customer service to the extreme. I don't think any of us want to meet a clerk like this one.
A 31-year-old deaf man, Cody Goodnight (pictured above), went to a Family Dollar store in Fort Worth to buy his 5-year-old son a soft drink. He put the drink on the counter and handed the clerk his money.
Evidently, the clerk spoke to the man while the transaction was taking place. When the deaf man did not respond to the clerk's words, the clerk threw his change at him. When the man bent over to pick up his change, the clerk grabbed a tire iron and hit him on the head!
The clerk later told police the man had been disrespectful by not answering him. Upon realizing he was in trouble, the clerk said he was afraid the man would attack him and thought he heard him mutter something "racial". When he was informed the customer was deaf, he just said, "Oh".
The clerk knew he had done wrong, because he erased the store's surveillance tape before the police arrived. Police arrested the clerk, and he has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
A Family Dollar spokesman wouldn't answer calls from the media, but the store might as well go ahead and open its checkbook and make things right with this customer. There's no way to defend this clerk's actions, and they are the ones who hired him and put him in contact with their customers.
Some customer service training wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Also, a policy against hiring morons.
ReplyDeletegood god! I hope he gets a million bucks and I hope that sorry ass clerk gets a long, long jail sentence...
ReplyDeleteSo when a Family Dollar clerk is disrespectful to me by not speaking to me for an entire transaction, do I get to hit him with a tire iron?
ReplyDeleteCuz I really want to, sometimes...
