Once again, Governor Perry shows us why over 60% of the population wanted someone else to be governor. He's made a couple of new appointments, and neither makes much sense.
First, he appoints Dallas lawyer Tom Pauken to head up the Texas Workforce Commission. It seems strange that he would put Pauken in the slot reserved for the public's representative (instead of one of the employer slots). Pauken is an ultra-right-winger. I don't see him sticking up for workers.
Unions were quick to criticize the appointment. Texas AFL-CIO president Becky Moeller said, "Tom Pauken has a long record of advocacy for right-wing views and even battled George W. Bush and John Cornyn because he thought they were too liberal. This does not bode well for working people who need a Workforce Commission that will seriously consider all sides of workplace issues."
Then Perry turns around and picks a Tarrant County resident to fill a spot on the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. He picked surgeon and attorney Steven Weinberg -- a teetotaler.
I have to wonder if Perry is just an incompetent boob, or does he go out of his way to find the most inappropriate person to appoint?
