Texas produces some smart, tough and brave women. If you have any doubt of that fact, let me tell you about Monica Lin Brown of Lake Jackson, Texas (pictured above). Spc. Brown is an Army medic stationed in Afghanistan. This month she will become only the second woman since World War II to be awarded the Silver Star (our nation's 3rd highest medal for valor).
In April of 2007, she was riding in a Humvee convoy when a roadside bomb blew up one of the vehicles. Five soldiers were seriously injured. Spc. Brown grabbed her medical bag and rushed to their aid, ignoring her own safety as she ran through insurgent gunfire.
She used her own body to help shield the wounded from nearby mortar fire and then helped drag them several hundred yards to a safer location, where she rendered medical aid until an evacuation helicopter arrived.
According to the military, Spc. Brown's "bravery, unselfish actions and medical aid rendered under fire saved the lives of her comrades and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat."
All of America should be proud of this daughter of Texas.
