Clinton has been bragging for several days now about winning in Texas, but that is really only a partial truth. She only won a part of the delegate selection process in Texas.
Texas will send a total of 228 delegates to the national convention. Of those, 35 are superdelegates. That means 193 delegates were up for selection on March 4th. The primary part of the selection process was used to pick 126 delegates. The other 67 delegates were to be picked in caucuses after the polls closed.
Clinton did barely eke out a win in the primary part of the process. That meant the 126 delegates were divided up at 65 for Clinton and 61 for Obama -- a four point margin for Clinton.
But when the caucuses were held that night, it looks like Obama won that part of the process. It looks like the caucuses will give Obama a 7-9 delegate edge. When the two parts of the process are put together, Obama will have a 3-5 delegate edge. And the person who got the most delegates is the real winner -- Barack Obama.
Some of Clinton's people are crying that the system is unfair. That's ridiculous! This is not a new system. Texas has been apportioning its delegates this way for years now. Anyone could have looked at Texas and known this before the primary season even started. So it was an even playing field for both candidates.
I think Clinton expected to wrap up the nomination by Super Tuesday, so her people really didn't pay much attention to Texas. By the time it was obvious that Texas would be important, they were trying to play catch-up and really didn't understand the importance of the second part of the process -- the caucuses.
The two candidates had an equal chance to work both parts of the system here in Texas. The fact is that Obama did a better job of it. That's why he wound up with the most delegates, and that's why he's the real winner in Texas.
Some Clinton people are making noises like they will go to court. If they do, it's just sour grapes. The system was fair. She just lost.
But that is exactly what makes it unfair. It's only fair if she wins.
