Russia Invades Georgia

It looks like war has broken out in Eastern Europe. The province of South Ossetia has been trying to break away from the country of Georgia for a while now. In an effort to end the conflict, Georgian troops tried to seize Tskhinvali in the northern part of Georgia.

The area is home to a large number of Russians, and Russia has been backing the rebels in South Ossetia. Russia responded by sending in hundreds of paratroopers, and is planning to send many more.

Russia is claiming the troops are "peacekeepers", but Georgia is calling it an invasion and said a state of war exists. In addition to the troops, the Russians are bombing many areas of Georgia, including some areas outside of South Ossetia. It is believed that over 2000 people have already been killed.

As the situation grows worse, many are worried that other countries may be pulled into the conflict, including possibly the United States. The U.S. is an ally of Georgia, and already has 135 troops there, who are training the Georgian army.

Bush has spoken out on the matter, saying, "Georgia is a sovereign nation and its territorial integrity must be respected. We have urged an immediate halt to the violence and a stand-down by all troops." But I'm not sure Bush's words carry any kind of moral authority.

Iraq was a soveriegn nation also, and posed no danger to the United States. That didn't stop him from invading and occupying the country. Why should Russia (or anyone else) listen to Bush, when he says one thing and does another thing?
