Health Care Statistics

In light of President Obama's recent speech, and the current push for health care reform, I thought it would be good to review some health care insurance statistics.

*Texas continues to lead the nation in the percentage of its citizens without health care insurance. The percentage of Texans without insurance is a whopping 25.1% (up from 24.1% in 2005-06). That's over 5 million Texans without insurance.

*In the United States as a whole, 15.4% of the population is without health insurance. That's a total of 46.3 million people with no insurance (up from 45.7 million in 2007).

*The total number of people with some kind of insurance is 255.1 million (up from 253.4 million in 2007).

*Although the number of people with private insurance rose slightly, the percentage has dropped from 67.5% in 2007 to 66.7% in 2008.

*The number of people with Medicare (government insurance) has risen from 41.4 million in 2007 to 43.0 million in 2008.

*The number of people with Medicaid (government insurance) has risen from 39.6 million in 2007 to 42.6 million in 2008.

*The uninsured rate for foreign-born persons (both citizens and non-citizens) is 33.5%.

*The uninsured rate for non-citizens is 44.7%.
