School Playing Politics

It looks like there was some politics being played regarding President Obama's speech to America's school children, but it was the president doing it. In fact, even many conservatives now admit the president's speech was free of politics. The president just asked the school children to stay in school, work hard and take responsibility for their own education -- a message that people on both the right and the left can agree on.

But while the president avoided politics, it seems that some school districts didn't. For instance, look at the actions of the Arlington Independent School District in Texas. This large school district refused to allow the president's speech to be broadcast to any of it's schools.

It's hard to understand why they did this, because they had shown the speech by President Bush years earlier. They are also bussing school children to the new Cowboys Stadium on September 21st to hear George Bush speak (on a school day).

So while they will not allow a Black Democratic president to speak to the district's school children, they have no problem exposing these same school children to a speech by a White Republican president. This sounds like the very definition of playing politics.

Pastor Dwight McKissic Sr. of Arlington's Cornerstone Baptist Church wants an explanation. He wants the school district to explain their "duplicity". I agree with the pastor. I'd like to hear an explanation too.

The district was either playing politics or bowing to racism. Which was it?
