Shroud Of Turin Replicated

The Shroud of Turin is one of the most notorious frauds in all of christianity. This has been known for years, since scientists in Oxford, Zurich and Tucson carbon-dated the shroud and found it only dated back to between 1260 AD and 1390 AD. In other words, it was made more than 1200 years after Jesus was supposed to have lived and died.

But scientists had admitted they did not know how the shroud was created. Many christians seized upon that to continue the myth that the shroud was real and was a miracle. Now it looks like that is no longer true. An Italian scientist, Luigi Garlaschelli, has not only figured out how it was done, but has replicated the shroud using only medieval tools and materials.

Here is how Reuters News describes Garlaschelli's process:

They placed a linen sheet flat over a volunteer and then rubbed it with a pigment containing traces of acid. A mask was used for the face. The pigment was then artificially aged by heating the cloth in an oven and washing it, a process which removed it from the surface but left a fuzzy, half-tone image similar to that on the Shroud. They then added blood stains, burn holes, scorches and water stains to achieve the final effect.

The two shrouds are pictured above, with the original on the left and Garlaschelli's replication on the right. The only difference is that the original appears faded (a process that would normally occur over time).

Garlaschelli did receive funding for his work from a group of Italian atheists and agnostics. He says this did not affect his results. He went on to say, "Money has no odor. This was done scientifically. If the church wants to fund me in the future, here I am."
