A group of Somali pirates decided it was time to seize another ship and hold it for ransom. They found a ship off the Somali coast and fired on it. It turned out to be a bad choice though. The ship was the Somme -- a command and supply ship of the French Navy.
The French returned fire, and when the pirates realized their horrible mistake, they turned and ran. However, the French naval vessel turned and chased them, capturing five of the pirates (see picture).
Here's how French Admiral Christophe Prazuck described it, "Once they realized they were facing a ship that was responding and heading towards them, they stopped shooting and attempted to flee. The Somme gave chase and intercepted one of the pirates' boats. All the weapons had apparently been tossed into the sea and the suspected pirates are now being held on board the Somme."
There are about two dozen warships from the European Union patrolling those waters, in addition to ships from the United States and other nations. I hope the remaining pirates will be stupid enough to attack all of them.
I would have loved to see the look on these pirates faces when they discovered what they had done!
