Deal With It

Yellowdog Granny shows us what's really bothering many right-wing teabaggers.

  1. Yeah, yeah - it's all about race, isn't it?

    Trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see;

    Oversold "stimulus" packages that do less to curb unemployment than the projected numbers for doing nothing;

    A health care system that forces citizens to buy something against their will and takes away tax incentives for corporations to fund their retirees' drug benefits, forcing those retirees into Medicare Part D;

    Government overreach in auto and insurance companies, student loans, and now commercial real estate;

    "Sweeteners" like the Cornhusker Kickback and the Louisiana Purchase to pass his "landmark legislation";

    Apparently none of these matters. It's all about race.

    Ted, I think you know me well enough by now to realize that if a conservative African-American was occupying the White House (and contrary to left-wing legends, there are conservative African-Americans), I'd be behind him 100%, as long as he stayed true to his conservative principles.

    If it was all about race, where was the Left's outrage in July 2004 when Ted Rall depicted Condoleezza Rice as a "house nigga"? (Here's a link to the cartoon in question.) As I recall (and shared a while back on this blog), there were plenty of left-wing bloggers who actually defended what Rall did.

    Are there racists in the Tea Party movement? Yes. Are there racists in the Republican Party? Yes. Are there racists in the Democratic Party? Yes. But painting any group with the broad brush of racism is the lazy man's way of avoiding debate on the legitimate political issues that the group raises.

    If you have a problem with the way Secretary of State Rice conducted foreign policy during the Bush administration, I'm OK with that. But I find Ted Rall's cartoon every bit as offensive as any of the racist signs that show up at Tea Party rallies. And just as I wouldn't call racist those who failed to denounce (or even defended) Rall's cartoon, I think it's equally as unfair to call the Tea Party movement predominently racist motivated.

    (BTW, President Obama isn't Black; he's bi-racial.)

  2. I stand by what I said.

    And by the way, the president identified himself as "black" on his census form.

  3. "I stand by what I said."

    That's a lot easier than taking on each issue I raised, one by one. But it still doesn't delegitimize those issues, as witnessed by the President's recent disapproval numbers.

    I refuse to believe that the 41 percent of Americans that strongly disapprove of the way President Obama is performing his role are all racists.

    "And by the way, the president identified himself as "black" on his census form."

    I've never put much stock in the kind of racial pigeon-holing the federal government engages in. He could have just as easily identified himself as "white" (or caucasian, or European-American, or whatever the label-du-jour is these days for people of European heritage). Tiger Woods's kids will be able to claim three different racial groups. What does that tell you?

    I haven't filled out my census form yet - my bad - but I will, and soon. Aside from the number of people living at our residence (two), I see no constitutional basis for any of the other questions. When I get to the question on race, I'm tempted to put what a lot of conservatives have been listing: American. Other possibilities are: Alsatian and/or Pommeranian (my paternal and maternal grandfathers were from Alsace and Pommerania, respectively).

  4. I never said 41% of the American people were racists, AND YOU KNOW THAT! However, I do believe that a large majority of the 16% of Americans who self-identify as teabaggers are racists. They have not really tried to hide their racism.

    And when you send in your census form, don't try to play some silly game on it. You know that marking "American" will accomplish nothing. It will just force the government to spend money to send a census worker to your home, take one look at you, and mark "white" on your form. You will have accomplished nothing.

  5. There were no teabaggers during Bush's administration, which is now legendary for its massive government expansions and spending, so golly gee whatever could be the problem here? It's a goddamned fool who tries to downplay the clearly racial underpinnings of their histrionics.

    Sure there are black conservatives but when I see video and pics of the teabagger protests, it's a whole lot of WHITE. Come on, bro. Who do you think you're talking to here?

  6. And thank you for the reminder that we now are forced to give our money to the corrupt health "insurance" industry. Please let that be Exhibit A when you tell your conservative friends that Obama (alas) is no socialist.

    I think I'm talking to someone who watches a lot of MSNBC and little else.

    If you did watch other networks (like CNN, for instance), you might have noticed that even on those rare occasions when African-Americans do show up at Tea Parties, MSNBC conveniently crops out their skin color when they don't fit into their carefully scripted narrative.

    Here's a link to two reports from last August about a gun toting protester at a presidential visit to Arizona. Compare the top video (MSNBC) to the bottom one (CNN) and you'll see why MSNBC had to crop out the person's race if they wanted to perpetuate the gun toting "racist" narrative.

    Does this mean that the tea partiers aren't overwhelmingly white? Of course not. But does that necessarily mean that they're overwhelmingly racist? Using that logic, you'd have to conclude that the on camera news staff at MSNBC is also racist, because they're overwhelmingly white, too.

    You're welcome.

    I think this shows ObamaCare for what it really is: a hodge-podge of deals thrown together without any apparent cohesion or overarching political philosophy.

    The health insurance industry, Big Pharma, even the pro-life faction of the Democratic Party - all of them lined up behind Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu for their respective buyout.

    When Dennis Kucinich (whom I consider the one of the most principled politicians on the Left) caved on single-payer for the price of a ride on Air Force One, I realized that the President was so desperate to pass something - anything - called health care reform before the mid-terms that content was the least of his concerns.

  9. The president passed exactly what the system told him to pass. He is giving away tax dollars to crooked corporations, just like everybody that has preceded him for the last 30 years.
