The Southern Republican Leadership Conference has just wound up. All of the Republicans that are considering a run for the presidency in 2012 made speeches to the Republican crowd in an effort to get a foot up on their current opponents. Ron Paul looked good again, just like he did at the CPAC convention, and would have to be considered a frontrunner right now.
But this time, he had to share the glory with Mitt Romney. Romney and Paul cornered nearly half the votes between the two of them. Everyone was was just an also-ran. Here's how the SLRC straw poll came out:
Mitt Romney...............24% (439)
Ron Paul...............24% (438)
Sarah Palin...............18% (330)
Newt Gingrich...............18% (321)
Mike Huckabee...............4%
Tim Pawlenty...............3%
Mike Pence...............3%
Rick Santorum...............2%
Gary Johnson...............1%
Frankly, if this is the best they've got, then the Democrats should be feeling pretty good about President Obama's re-election chances in 2012. But it's still early, and who knows, maybe they will come up with a more credible candidate before crunch time in early 2012.
