One of these three "news" sites seems to have a guilty conscience. Instead of simply reporting the news, they are trying furiously to place blame for their own violent rhetoric on someone else. I wonder which of the three it could be? From the excellent blog called
The Immoral Minority.
My apologies to commenter Curious Texan. I accidentally deleted your comment. I went to my e-mail and got it and here it is:
ReplyDeleteGuilty of what, Ted?
According to all reports, the shooter didn't watch TV, was politically disinterested, and never listened to talk radio.
According to this Washington Post article, posted at azcentral.com:
"A picture of Loughner gleaned from interviews with more than two dozen friends, classmates, teachers and neighbors, as well as from his own writing in online forums, shows no evidence that politics or government were among his defining or enduring obsessions. Rather, his deepest, most disturbing questions were about the very nature of reality: He appeared to have lost any clear sense of the line between real life and dreams or fantasy."
Even President Obama acknowledged this in his speech last night:
"For the truth is that none of us can know exactly what triggered this vicious attack. None of us can know with any certainty what might have stopped those shots from being fired, or what thoughts lurked in the inner recesses of a violent man’s mind..."
"And if, as has been discussed in recent days, their deaths help usher in more civility in our public discourse, let’s remember that it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy, but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to our challenges as a nation, in a way that would make them proud." [Emphasis added]
Where's the evidence, Ted? The cause and effect between Fox News and this horrific incident?
And now my answer:
ReplyDeleteIn this post I did not say their violent rhetoric caused Loughner to shoot anyone -- only that they seem to be furiously trying to cover for themselves. However, I do believe their rhetoric has contributed to a political climate in this country that encourages such behavior. Even if Loughner did not have Fox as his mentor, many others committing violent acts have.
