GOP Is Trying To Throw Millions More Into Poverty

The above chart is based on data from the United States Census Bureau. As it shows, the Republican "trickle-down" economic policy (which has been in place since about 1980) has resulted in 15.5% of the American people living in poverty -- that's about one out of every 6.7 Americans (or about 48.4 million people). That's pretty bad, and the total goes up with each passing month.

But if the Republicans had their way, the figures would be far worse. If they had been successful in blocking the 2009 Recovery Act (as they tried to do), which contained some temporary social help measures, the total percentage of Americans living in poverty would be about 17.8%, or another 7.2 million people (for a total of 55.6 million).

And what is the Republican solution for our ailing economy? They want to give rich people more tax cuts and pay for that by abolishing the social safety net in this country (including Social Security and Medicare). If the Republicans had their way, and there had been no 2009 Recovery Act and no social safety net (already in place when the recession hit), the current poverty rate would be at least 28.6%, nearly double the current shameful rate. That would mean that 89.4 million Americans would be living in poverty (more than 1 out of 4 people).

How much proof do we need before we realize that Republicans don't care about the United States or most of its citizens. They only care about themselves and their Wall Street buddies. Anyone making less than a million dollars a year is a fool to vote Republican.
