Cain Drops Out Of GOP Race

Herman Cain surprised no one yesterday when he dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination. he rode high for a while with some of the teabaggers because he knew how to do the crazy talk that they like. But it didn't take long for his inexperience and lack of knowledge to expose him, especially in foreign policy matters. And when it cam out that he's a serial skirt-chaser and harasser (in spite of the fact that he's married), his campaign quickly began to die. One example of this is the latest poll by the Des Moines Register, which showed that Cain's support in that state had dropped back down into single-digits.

I didn't think I could respect Cain any less, but I was wrong. When he marched out his wife (a lady who has tried to stay out of the limelight) to cover for his sexual misdeeds as he dropped out of the race, he reached a new low in my eyes. Mrs. Cain is a classy lady, and classy ladies don't air their dirty laundry in public -- but it was just wrong for Cain to use that to publicly humiliate her. It would serve him right if she found a greedy divorce lawyer and took him to the cleaners.

Cain said he would be making an endorsement soon, but I doubt any endorsement from Cain would have much effect on the GOP race. It does bring up the question of who benefits from Cain dropping out though. And the answer to that question is -- anybody but Romney.

It has become very apparent recently that the teabagger base of the Republican Party does not like or respect Mitt Romney. Romney's best chance at the nomination was for several teabagger candidates to split that vote and allow him to get to the late primary states with a lead in delegates -- making him look like the eventual winner. But Cain dropping out hurts that strategy, because there is now one less candidate to appeal to the teabaggers.

It is within the realm of possibility that Perry, Bachmann, and maybe even Santorum could pick up some votes from the Cain supporters. But I expect the biggest winner will be Newt Gingrich, since he is the current "flavor-of-the-month" for the teabaggers (and we're only a month away from the Iowa caucuses which start the primary season).
