Darwin Day

Today is the birthday of famed naturalist Charles Robert Darwin. He was born on February 12,  1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He died on April 19, 1882 at the age of 73. The picture above was done in 1881, about a year before his death. Darwin was the scientist who convinced the world that all forms of animal life, including human beings, had evolved over time from a common ancestry. Today, more than a century after his death, Darwin remains one of the most respected and revered scientists of all time by those who respect science and reality -- and one of the most hated men of all time by fundamentalist theocrats who refuse to accept the reality of evolution. For me, he is a true hero. I am proud to honor him on this important day -- his day.
