A Couple Of Interesting Polls

The Gallup Poll released a couple of interesting polls yesterday (that have absolutely nothing to do with the presidential race this year). The first one (above) shows the businesses (industries) that the American people view the most positively or negatively. The computer industry is viewed most positively by far. About 73% of Americans have a positive view of it -- far above the second place industry, restaurants at 59%.

But what I found even more interesting is the bottom three industries. The banking industry is viewed positively by only 25% of people (and negatively by 53%). The federal government is viewed positively by 23% (and negatively by 60%). And bringing up the rear is the oil & gas industry, viewed positively by only 22% (and negatively by 61%).

None of these three really surprised me. Evidently the White House brings up the score for the federal government, because just a few days ago the Gallup Poll showed Congress viewed favorably by only 10% of the population -- and that view was shared by Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

Meanwhile, I have to wonder after viewing this poll, why the congressional Republicans have tied themselves so closely to the banking and the oil & gas industries -- the two private industries least respected in this country? That doesn't seem to be a very smart thing in an election year.

The second chart highlights the problem of obesity in the United States -- and it does seem to be a widespread problem. Sadly, there is not a single state in this nation that does not have a majority of its population that is overweight or obese. The state with the smallest number of obese or overweight citizens is Colorado (where 55.1% of the people are overweight/obese). Here are top top ten states that have the most and the least percentages of obese/overweight people:

HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF OVERWEIGHT/OBESE RESIDENTS
West Virginia...............69.3%
Mississippi...............68.8%
Kentucky...............67.2%
Iowa...............66.6%
North Dakota...............66.5%
Oklahoma...............65.6%
South Carolina...............65.6%
Arkansas...............65.5%
Alabama...............65.3%
Indiana...............65.3%

LOWEST PERCENTAGE OF OVERWEIGHT/OBESE RESIDENTS
Colorado...............55.1%
Hawaii...............55.9%
Rhode Island...............57.2%
California...............58.7%
Utah...............58.9%
Massachusetts...............59.1%
Idaho...............59.1%
Arizona...............60.1%
Oregon...............60.4%
New York...............60.7%

It looks like a whole lot of Americans need to learn how to push themselves away from the dinner table (before they gorge themselves on seconds or thirds). And my fellow Texans shouldn't get too big a head by not making the top list. The percentage of people overweight/obese in Texas is 64.3%. If you would like to know the percentage in your own state, you can go to this Gallup Poll site and find your state on the map provided (and put your cursor over your state).

  1. Interesting indeed that the computer industry is viewed so favorably, since no other industry on the list even comes close to their huge profit margins. We rant and rage about the "windfall" and "gigantic" profits made big big oil and insurance, both of which make 10% or less, and we favor computer indistries 73% to 10% when their profit margins run well in excess of 50%.

  2. People love their computers, and it makes them overlook all of the obvious flaws of the computer industry.
