There is a reason why Willard Mitt Romney (aka Wall Street Willie) finishes a poor second to President Obama on foreign policy issues in every poll that's been taken over the last few months. It's because he has demonstrated a total ineptitude when it comes to dealing with other countries. A prime example of this was when he visited Great Britain at the start of the Olympics. It took him less than a day to turn the whole country (and even many of its conservative leaders) against him, by questioning whether they could handle holding the Olympic Games (something they successfully did for the third time). By the time he left, the Brits considered him a fool.
And it wasn't just friends of the United States he upset. He also complicated relations with a country the United States is trying to establish a tenuous friendship with -- Russia. He did this by calling them our "number one geopolitical foe". I guess we should be thankful he's no longer calling Russia the USSR. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said, "I'm grateful to him (Romney) for formulating his stance so clearly because he has once again proven the correctness of our approach to missile defense problems. Putin went on to say that Romney's comments "strengthened his resolve to oppose NATO's plan for a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, a system Russia believes will degrade its nuclear deterrent."
Now he's shot himself in the foot again. Instead of keeping quiet or backing the president on a serious and dangerous foreign situation -- the attacking of American embassies in Egypt and Libya (and the killing of an American ambassador) -- Romney decided to score some political points by blaming the crises on President Obama for apologizing for America. The truth was that the president didn't apologize to anyone.
And even after being criticized for this obvious blunder by many in his own party, Romney wouldn't change his tone or accusation. In fact, he repeated it again the next day. And you can see the smirk on his face (in the picture above) after meeting with reporters on the matter. He obviously thinks he has scored some political points, and is giddy about it. What he really did was once again make himself look like a fool.
Frankly, it's frightening to think that some Americans want to put this man in charge of all of our foreign policy decisions. He's starting to make George Bush look good.
