The Republicans want to cut the amount of money the federal government spends on food stamps (and free lunches for poor school children). To do that, they spread the lie that it is just those lazy, inner-city (and non-white) people who use the food stamp program. The truth is that most of the people on food stamps are white, and a significant and growing number live in the suburbs and rural areas. They may well be your friends and neighbors.
Until we can get this economy moving again (on Main Street, not Wall Street) and start producing many more jobs, we are going to need more funds for food stamps -- not less. Cutting food stamp money right now makes no sense, and will do nothing but hurt Americans who are already suffering. If cuts must be made, it should be in subsidies for corporations and in the bloated military budget, not in funds for people already living at a subsistence level.
