I found this chart, made from information provided by the 2010 U.S. Census, to be very interesting. It shows the percentage of same-sex couples raising children in each of the 50 states (and the District of Columbia). Note that the 11 states with the highest percentage of same-sex couples raising children are red states, where they refuse to grant these couples equal rights (such as the right to marry).
These red states may continue to protect their discriminatory laws, but they cannot keep these couples from forming families and raising children -- just like other people do. This is a good sign, because it tells me that there are many good decent people even in the most backward of states, and slowly but surely discrimination is being defeated.
There are still many battles to be fought on many fronts (not only for the LGBT community, but also for minorities and women), but with each passing generation we are becoming a better, more free, and more equal country. And someday, America will truly live up to its promise of equality under the law and equality of opportunity for all of its citizens. All we have to do is keep the faith and continue the fight.
