The Democratic Party was more successful in their fundraising effort for 2013 than the Republican Party -- topping the Republicans overall by about $15.4 million. The combined total for the Democratic organizations (DNC, DCCC, DSCC) was $193.2 million, while the combined total for the Republican organizations (RNC, NRCC, NRSC) was about $177.8 million -- according to total fundraising reported to the Federal Elections Commission.
This tells me that the Democrats are more in tune with the masses and get a lot of their money from small donors -- since most corporate and Wall Street money is going to the Republican Party. It also tells me that the Democrats are more effective in their internet outreach.
This does not necessarily mean the Democrats will be able to outspend the Republicans in the 2014 election though. These figures don't count the money going to private Super-PACs (which I believe is around $63 million right now) -- and most of that money will be spent to support Republican candidates. What the above figures do say is that the old days of Republicans raising much more than Democrats is over -- and the Democrats will be able to compete on a more equal basis in this election year.
