Public Opposes The GOP Call To Impeach The President
The teabagger element of the congressional GOP is no longer happy just blocking everything proposed by the president to get this country back on track. Now they have taken their racist hatred for the president to a new level, and they are calling for his impeachment. They have no basis on which to impeach President Obama -- but they've never worried about facts or truth before, so they are ignoring the fact that the president has done nothing that would justify any move to impeach him. It simply galls them that an African-American was elected and re-elected, and will serve out his full terms, and for them, their hatred is more important than justice (or what is good for the country).
Frankly, even understanding the depth of their hatred for the president, I am still a bit surprised that they would try to promote such a ridiculous idea as impeachment with an election looming. Are they really insane enough to think the voting public would support an attempt to impeach the president (after they re-elected him, and still give him a job approval rating far above that of Congress)? If so, they are wrong -- and starting an effort to impeach the president might be the final death knell for GOP hopes in the coming election.
The charts above are from a recent Rasmussen Poll (conducted on July 11th and 12th of a random national sample of 1,000 likely voters, with a margin of error of 3 points). Note that a significant majority of Americans (58%) oppose any attempt to impeach President Obama (while only 32% would support it). In addition, more than half of those surveyed said it would be bad for the country.
But the most interesting part of this survey to me was the belief that such a move would hurt the Republican Party (and it's chances in the coming election). That belief is held by 56% of the general public, 55% of Independents, 77% of Democrats, and even 32% (about 1/3) of Republicans. It may make these teabagger congress-critters feel good to call for the president's impeachment, but it's not going to do their party any good in the coming election.
