Stage 2 Presents An Early Test In This Year's Tour


Normally, stage 2 of the Tour de France is a fairly flat and non-eventful race designed to let the sprinters show off their speed at the finish. That was not the case this year, as stage 2 had nine category climbs (with the last coming very close to the end of the race). The peloton was able to stay together for the most part and reel in breakaway attempts, but Italian Vincenzo Nibali took off with only a couple of kilometers to go and was able to win by a couple of seconds. Greg Van Avermaet of Belgium finished second, and Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland finished in third. Stage 3 will be much better suited for the sprinters, and will be the last stage before the race returns to France. Here are the current standings:
