Stage 5 Cobblestones Shake Up The Tour Standings


Through the first four stages of this year's Tour de France, we had 21 riders within two seconds of the overall lead in the race, but the nine stretches of cobblestones in stage 5 (designated on the map above by the white boxes with red numbers) shook up the overall standings significantly. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy was able to survive the cobblestones and retain the race lead, but now only one rider is within two seconds (and the rider in third place is 44 seconds behind). Dutch rider Lars Boom won stage 5. Jakob Fuglsang from Denmark finished in second place and Vincenzo Nibali of Italy finished third -- both 19 seconds behind the winner.

Stage 6 should be a little easier for most riders. The 194 kilometer course has two climbs, but they are only category 4 climbs and shouldn't be a problem for most riders. Here are the current standings:
