Stage 8 Is The Beginning Of The Mountain Stages


About 40 kilometers into the 161 kilometer 8th stage of this year's Tour de France, a breakaway of five riders left the peloton. The three difficult climbs at the end of that stage allowed the strongest rider in that breakaway to survive and win the stage. It was Blel Kadri of France. Alberto Contador of Spain finished in second, and Vincenzo Nibali of Italy finished in third. That third place finish allowed Nibali to keep his overall race lead, and even extend it.

The mountainous stage 9 will be even more difficult -- with three category 3 climbs, two category 2 climbs, and a very tough category 1 climb. Here are the current standings:
