Great quote, and it reminds me why Paine is so great.
He attacked the old British government and the Americans loved him. Then he attacked the new American government didn't love him so much.
he attacked religion.
He went to France during the midst of the French Revolution, was imprisoned during the revolution, but because of his anti-religion tracts, he was too controversial for his old American friends (the Founding Fathers themselves) to spend political capital saving.
What I like best about him is that he kept fighting the power even when he and his buddies took the reins.
great quote! whether the creation of religion was intended as good or evil, paine's statement is accurate as to where religion is today and has been for quite some time.
