Additionally, a new Gallup Poll (see below) shows that a majority of Americans would consider other kinds of stricter gun laws. This brings up the question -- why hasn't Congress done something on the issue of gun violence? Do they work for us, or for the NRA?
That's the question Elizabeth Warren asks in her newest missive. And she asks us to put some pressure on Congress to take action. She writes:
Who does this Congress work for: The American people? Or the NRA?
88 Americans die every day from gun violence. Seven of those people are children or teens. What has happened to us? If seven children were dying every day from a mysterious virus, our country would pull out all the stops to figure out what went wrong and fix it.
But day after day, month after month, tragedy after tragedy, Congress has done nothing. NOTHING. Republicans have blocked even the smallest steps to protect our communities and keep our children safe.
This month, Senate Democrats stood on the Capitol steps and called for three measures to reduce gun violence:

This month, Senate Democrats stood on the Capitol steps and called for three measures to reduce gun violence:
- End the gun show loophole – everyone gets a background check.
- End straw purchases – the person who gets checked out has to be the true owner, and gun trafficking should be a serious federal crime to help law enforcement stop illegal guns from crossing state lines.
- Close the holes in the background check database and stop domestic abusers from purchasing guns – period.
Yes, we know that three steps won’t be enough to stop all gun violence in our communities. But these are meaningful steps in the right direction – steps that huge majorities of Americans support.
It’s past time for Republicans in Congress to make a choice: Do they work for the NRA or for the American people? Join Senate Democrats to demand action.
Thank you for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
