Public Supports Obama's Right To Nominate New Justice

The Republicans are still promising to ignore or block any Supreme Court nominee sent to the Senate by President Obama. They are trying to float the notion that the next president should make that appointment -- even though that would leave the Court short-handed for the next year.

This is just pure politics, and a majority of Americans disagree with the GOP's attitude. About 53% of the general public say President Obama should nominate the next Supreme Court justice, while only 34% say he should not. And that is true of all gender, age and racial groups.

Congress will probably block the president's nominee, but it may work against them. The public is already angry at Congress, and this will only fuel that anger for most people.

These numbers are from a new YouGov Poll -- done on February 17th and 18th of a random national sample of 1,000 adults, with a margin of error of 4.3 points.
