Political Views Color What Is Viewed As "Christian"

I am a committed atheist (and have been for over 40 years), but I found this survey very interesting. While all christians claim to get their religious views from the Bible, that may not be true. It seems that political views can alter one's views of what it takes to be a good christian. As this poll shows, while reading the same Bible, Democrats and Independents and Republicans have differing views on how to be a good christian.

If Jesus was a real person and intended to start the new religion called christianity (both of which are in doubt), I wonder what he would think about people letting their political views color their religious views? Wouldn't he be upset at some christians judging other christians -- especially when that judgement seems to be a political one?

The charts above were made from a new YouGov Poll -- done between April 1st and 3rd of a random national sample of 1,000 adults, with a margin of error of 4.2 points.

  2. As a liberal Catholic (but someone who loves your blog!), I'm not surprised by this. But thank you for posting this, because I found it a fascinating read.
