The Political Parties Have Flip-Flopped On Free Trade

When the idea of free trade agreements first came up, it was an idea supported by Republicans and viewed as a mistake by Democrats. That has now changed. As this poll shows, the Democrats support free trade agreements now more than Republicans do.

When asked if they support or oppose withdrawing from NAFTA, the Democrats were opposed (17% supporting withdrawal and 57% opposing it) by a 40 point margin. Republicans supported withdrawing by a 22 point margin (46% to 24%).

And when asked whether they would support negotiating more free trade agreements like NAFTA, the Democrats were 10 points more in favor than Republicans (51% to 41%).

It would seem that Democrats are now the "free trade" party.

These charts reflect the results of the newest Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between September 3rd and 5th of a random national sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,309 registered voters), with a 3 point margin of error.
