We Are A Nation Of Immigrants (And That's A Good Thing)

The chart above is from Axios.com. It shows where the immigrants to this country have come from between 1850 and now. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most immigrants came from Europe (and were white). That has changed. Now the bulk of immigrants come from Mexico, Central America, and Asia -- and they are not white. This has caused many on the right to want to cut off immigration (or once again restrict it to Europeans). They are wrong, and their odious views are a repudiation of our basic values.

Whether Trump and his base of xenophobic deplorable want to admit it or not, we are a nation of immigrants. We have always been a nation of immigrants, and if we are smart, we will always be a nation of immigrants.

This country benefits greatly from immigrants. They provide hope, diversity, economic strength, and rejuvenate the belief in democracy and the American Dream. Immigrants (both documented and undocumented) strengthen our country. Fearing immigration is both stupid and un-American. We should be grateful instead.
