Pope Francis has died. While some may have wished he had gone even further, he was definitely a progressive force in the world - always coming down on the side of the poor, disadvantaged, and those outside of societal norms. He also tried to further world peace.
The question now is what will the future bring. Will the next Pope be a progressive or regressive force in the world. Will he bring the church closer to 21st century values, or sink it back into 19th or 20th century values?
You may think it odd that I am discussing this (since I have been an avowed atheist for over 50 years). But like it or not, the Catholic Church is a force in the world.
There are over 1.4 billion Catholics in the world, and most of them follow the dictates of the Pope. And because of that, the leaders of both Catholic and non-Catholic countries pay attention to papal dictates (whether they agree with them or not).
The views of the next Pope will matter. Let's hope the Cardinals are visionary enough to choose another progressive.
