The man being thrown to the ground and handcuffed in the picture above is U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. What was his terrible crime? He tried to ask a question of Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem (as she was telling outrageous lies about the Los Angeles demonstrations).
This was not an isolated incident. In the last few weeks, the Trump administration has arrested a judge, a mayor, and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Their crime was the same as Padilla's - trying to draw attention to Donald Trump's cruel and illegal actions.
It goes further. Trump has attacked universities and law firms - basically any person or entity who had the temerity to oppose him or question his actions.
This is all part of Trump's attempt to grab more power for himself. He wants to have the same power as the dictators he admires, and he's using the government's power to do it.
Although several agencies (headed by Trump sycophants) are participating, the primary tool is the Department of Justice and the policing agencies within it.
The DOJ has abandoned any notion of justice. It would not be more properly called the Department of Retribution Against Anything Trump Doesn't Like (the DORAATDL).
He is even using the military in his war on the rights enshrined in the Constitution (having deployed 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines against demonstrators in Los Angeles).
Our democracy is hanging by a thread - and that thread is fraying.
