Trump Thinks He Has Created Peace In The Middle East - He's Wrong

There is a ceasefire in Gaza. The Israeli hostages have been released and Palestinian prisoners have also been released. Food and medical aid is beginning to flowing Gaza. Those are good things that needed to happen, and I give Trump credit for helping to accomplish that (along with pressure on Israel from much of the rest of the world).

But Trump thinks he has accomplished much more than that. He seems to think he has created peace in the Middle East. Here are his words to the Israeli Knesset:

“After so many years of unceasing war and endless danger, today the skies are calm, the guns are silent. The sirens are still. And the sun rises on a holy land that is finally at peace. This is the historic dawn of a new Middle East.”

At best he is being very premature, and at worst he is being completely delusional. The ceasefire does not mean peace has been established in the Middle East. We don't even know yet if the ceasefire will hold, and even if it does, there are still many obstacles to peace in Gaza - let alone the Middle East.

Israel has not completely withdrawn from Gaza, and we don't know when they will (or if they will).

Israel continues to steal Palestinian land to build new Israeli settlements (mainly in the West Bank).

Netanyahu has declared there will never be a two-state solution.

Hamas has not given up their arms, and aren't likely to do so. Even if they do, other terrorist organizations remain armed and dangerous throughout the Middle East.

Hamas (and other terrorist organizations) have not declared that Israel has a right to exist.

No agreement has been reached on a viable government for Gaza.

Gaza and the West Bank remain virtual prison colonies under Israeli rule, and the Palestinians living in them have no rights.

The new government in Syria remains fragile, and problems persist in Iraq.

Iran remains a problem.

Hezbollah (another terrorist organization) rules in Lebanon.

The Kurds in Turkey and Syria still want a homeland of their own.

There are many impediments to peace in the Middle East, even if the Palestinian situation is finally solved (and it is still not close to being solved).

While Trump basks in glory for a ceasefire in Gaza, he is far from creating any lasting peace in the Middle East. And I doubt he has the diplomatic skills to even come close to creating Middle East peace (since his idea of diplomacy is to bully other nations).
