It is said that politics makes strange bedfellows. Evidently it also has some strange relatives also. Lynne Cheney, the wife of the Republican Dark Lord a.k.a. Dick Cheney, says she discovered an odd connection while doing research for her book Blue Skies, No Fences.
According to Mrs. Cheney, her husband and presidential candidate Barack Obama are distant cousins. That would make for one hell of a family reunion wouldn't it?
Obama's heritage can be traced back to a French Huguenot named Mareen Duvall. Duvall's son married the granddaughter of a certain Richard Cheney, who arrived in Maryland in the 1650's. According to Cheney, that makes the vice-president the 8th cousin of Barack Obama (although a Chicago newspaper has it figured as 9th cousins once removed).
We do live in a strange world. I'd have thought the recent presidential polls would have been bad enough news for Obama, but this has to be even more disheartening. Looks like he's having a bad week.
But ever the optimist, Obama had the perfect comeback -- "Every family has a black sheep."
