Kinky Friedman, independent candidate for governor of Texas, will get a little help from out-of-state in the coming week. Former Minnesota governor, Jesse Ventura, is coming to Texas for three days to help Kinky campaign. The duo will be visiting and campaigning at several college campuses. Here are their scheduled appearances:

I loved when Ventura said "Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers."

ReplyDeleteDon't pay any mind to Kinky's campaign talk about having "prayer and the Ten Commandments put back in the schools" and "If you don't love Jesus, go to hell."
I heard Bill Hillsman recently spoke about the politics of inoculation and, while he didn't mention Kinky by name, he referred to a Jewish client of his who was employing this technique to inoculate himself on the issue of religion in a very Christian state.
Kinky does not attend church, and he said this about a his last campaign:
But it wasn't former U-boat commanders who torpedoed my candidacy. It was my inability to appeal to the religious right. To me, the religious right has always seemed like the kind of place where if Jesus walked in with three nails, they'd probably put him up for the night. But I persevered. I even went so far as to become a Southern Baptist until I realized that they didn't hold 'em under long enough.… Thus it was, because of my personal disillusionment with politics, that I finally became a charismatic atheist. About the only article of faith that we charismatic atheists truly cling to is the belief that ballet is basketball for homosexuals.... I often encourage young people to go ahead and get into politics themselves. You see, I don't like young people, and if they become involved in that worthless tar baby that is politics, the more chance there is that maybe they'll leave me alone.
Clearly, Kinky's "good shepherd" advertisement and his talk about posting the Ten Commandments in school classrooms and having prayer time dusing class, that's all just a result of Kinky learning the lesson from his last election where he lost because he failed to appeal to the religious right. Kinky will drop this b.s. as soon as he's elected. I'm sure it's just something the campaign gurus are making him do. Have no fear, Kinky no more believes this school prayer tripe than you or me or Jesse, but it's something Kinky feels like he has to say because he's a Jew running for office in Texas.
This type of political positioning makes me uncomfortable with Kinky.
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows Kinky is not a religious nut, but then you see his church-lady TV ad and his kooky comments about school prayer and the Ten Commandments. I had worried about the possibility that Kinky was being disingenuous with regard to religion to win votes, but I didn't want to believe it.
Now that I have seen Kinky's Texas Monthly article where Kinky said "my inability to appeal to the religious right . . . torpedoed my candidacy," I cannot reach any conclusion other than Kinky's religious talk is just to manipulate gullible religious voters. That's disheartening.
I was willing to see past the recent storm about Kinky poorly chosen comments, but I think this is where I get off the Kinky bandwagon.

P.S. Will the last one on the bandwagon please tell Kinky he lost his last election because he ran as a Republian?
Would you please double check that quote? If it is true and Kinky's comments about school prayer are motivated by his feeling that he lost his last election because his candidacy was unattractive to the religious right, I am very troubled.
