Tex Randall (pictured above) is a statue. He weighs 7 tons and stands 47 feet tall, and he's stood by Highway 60 near Canyon in the Texas Panhandle since 1959. He has become sort of a beloved landmark for the people near Amarillo.
PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) has decided now they want to put old Tex to work for them. They sent a letter to Tex's owner proposing to lease the weather-beaten statue. They want to put a sign on Tex reading "For Cow's Sake, Give Leather the Boot". PETA says it wants to make Tex into an emblem of "Texas' compassion".
Fortunately, that's not going to happen. Tex's owner, Danny Byrd, says he got PETA's letter and threw it in the trash. He says Tex is not for lease, and if it were, it would not be for such a purpose. Byrd says, "In this area, we kind of make our living on cattle and agriculture and that's part of our heritage."
I have to agree with Mr. Byrd. It would be a sacrilege to desecrate Tex with that kind of message here in the Texas Panhandle. It would also be like biting the hand that feeds you. Farming and ranching is the life-blood of the Panhandle area.
Besides, isn't there some kind of law here in Texas against making a pair of cowboy boots out of anything but leather?
