Finally, the NFL Hall of Fame voters have come to their senses. Last Saturday, it was announced that the legendary Bob Hayes, wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, has been voted into the National Football League Hall of Fame. I wish it had happened during his lifetime, but better late than never.
I can't believe it has taken this long, because Bob Hayes was one of those special players that changed the game because of his extraordinary skills. He was the gold medalist in the 100 yard-dash at the 1964 Olympics, and also the world-record holder. As a wide receiver for the Cowboys, he was so fast that he couldn't be covered man-to-man, and is credited with causing the league to develop the "zone defense" and the "bump and run". He was also an extraordinary punt returner.
"Bullet Bob", as he was known, was instrumental in helping Dallas to win it's first Super Bowl. For years, he received fan mail addressed only to "World's Fastest Human, Dallas, Texas". He did live long enough to see his name enshrined in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor, but died in 2002.
There have been many great Cowboys, but Hayes was truly legendary. I feel privileged to have been able to see him play.
