Kinky Friedman, who is considering a second run for the governor's office, poked a little fun at Texas' current governor last week. After hearing about Governor Rick Perry's broken collarbone from a bicycling accident, Kinky sent the governor a set of bicycle training wheels.
Mixing a little politics in with the joke, Kinky included a note that said "Sorry you got hurt. Too bad they don’t make training wheels for a legislative session." He was referring, of course, to the failure of the recent legislative session to get all its business done before adjourning. They failed to re-authorize three departments -- the Department of Transportation, the Racing Commission and the Department of Insurance. Now the governor has to call a special session to get this done.
Kinky believes the special session has to be called because the governor failed in his leadership. Another of Perry's gubanatorial opponents, Kay Baily Hutchison, agrees. She also called it a failure of leadership. Both Friedman and Hutchison say the special session would not be necessary if they had been governor.
Kinky also took exception to Governor Perry's bragging about how the economic downturn has not affected Texas as much as some other states. He said, "A baboon could have led us and we'd still be doing OK. It's a big rich state. Good weather. A lot of people like to come here."
