It's About Time !

It took them nearly 30 years to get it done, but the NFL Hall of Fame has finally inducted "Bullet" Bob Hayes of the Dallas Cowboys. I'm still amazed that it took this long. There are only a few players that had such an impact on the game that they altered the way it is played. But Bob Hayes was one of them.

The man who used to receive mail addressed to "World's Fastest Human, Dallas, Texas", was so fast that none of the defensive backs could cover him "man-to-man". In order to somewhat control the speedy Cowboys receiver, the "zone coverage" of wide receivers was invented (and is still used today).

Hayes was presented to the Hall of Fame crowd by his son Bob Hayes Jr., and former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach (both pictured above). Staubach said, “He was impactful…and that’s what the Hall of Fame is about. A great player like Bob Hayes truly had an impact on the NFL, and he had a tremendous impact on the Dallas Cowboys.”

The only sad note about the event was that Bob Hayes did not live to see his own induction. He died seven years ago. His son said, “It hurts, because he should have been here to witness this special occasion. But unfortunately, he didn’t make it to see it. I know wherever he is, he’s smiling down; he’s happy. He knows what’s going on, and he’ll be with us in our spirits, in our hearts and our minds.”
