Majority Opposes Tax Cuts For The Rich

The Democrats don't seem to realize they have a winning issue on their hands.   Some of the "blue dog" conservative Democrats are saying they may vote with Republicans to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich (those making over $250,000 a year).   I can understand why the Republicans might want to oppose eliminating the tax cuts for the top 2% of Americans -- they are campaigning on the large federal deficit and don't want to do anything to lower that deficit before the election (not to mention that they sold out to the rich and the corporate interests a long time ago).

But the Democrats, especially the "blue dogs" are just running scared.   They are afraid if they don't extend all of the Bush tax cuts (instead of just for the lowest 98% of Americans) then it might hurt them at the polls in November.   They are wrong.   They have a winning issue on their hands and aren't smart enough to know it (but then the "blue dogs" aren't very bright to begin with).

Republicans are trying to convince Americans that Obama's proposed elimination of the tax cuts for the richest 2% of Americans will affect everyone (or will hurt job creation), but the people aren't buying those lies this time around.   They know that ordinary Americans, both the working and middle classes, will not be affected at all.   They also know this will help bring down the federal deficit.   And they believe the rich should pay their fair share of taxes.

The fact is that a clear majority of Americans are opposed to continuing the tax cuts for the richest Americans.   This is not a guess or a hope.   It has been borne out by poll after poll.   Here is what the polls are saying:

NEWSWEEK POLL
Let the cuts expire...............52%
Let rich keep cuts...............38%

CBS POLL
Let the cuts expire...............56%
Let rich keep cuts...............36%

CNN POLL
Let the cuts expire...............69%
Let rich keep cuts...............31%

GALLUP POLL
Let the cuts expire...............59%
Let rich keep cuts...............37%

NATIONAL JOURNAL POLL
Let the cuts expire...............56%
Let rich keep cuts...............35%

It's time for the Democrats to wake up and smell the roses.   They need to extend the tax cuts for everyone but the richest 2%, and do it as quickly as possible.   It won't hurt them at the ballot box.   In fact, it may actually help.
