Majority In U.S. Favor Stricter Gun Control

In the wake of all the recent shootings in this country, it only makes sense that someone would do a poll on American attitudes toward gun laws. And the Public Religion Research Institute has done just that. The survey was done by questioning a random sample of 1,006 adults between August 8th and 12th (and has a margin of error of about 3.5 points).

There was one question whose results should make the National Rifle Association (NRA) very happy. It seems that slightly more than two-thirds of Americans (about 68%) think the Second Amendment is just as important as the other amendments to our Constitution. But the rest of the results would probably disappoint the NRA (who don't seem to think there should be any rules at all regarding gun ownership). Here is some of what the poll found:

SHOULD THE U.S. HAVE STRICTER GUN CONTROL LAWS?
Yes...............52%
No...............44%

SHOULD THERE BE STRICTER ENFORCEMENT OF CURRENT GUN CONTROL LAWS?
Yes...............67%
No...............31%

SHOULD CURRENT GUN CONTROL LAWS BE LOOSENED?
Yes...............26%
No...............69%

PERCENT SAYIN CONCEALED GUNS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN. . .
Church or place of worship...............76%
Government building...............73%
College campus...............77%

SHOULD GUN CONTROL BE A STATE OR FEDERAL ISSUE?
Federal...............46%
State...............51%

In addition, only 11% of the population believes allowing more people to carry guns will prevent mass shooting (see chart above), while 27% believe it can be done by stricter gun control laws and enforcement. Clearly, the NRA is out of step with the majority of Americans.
