So when he said, famously, that 'God does not play with dice' he was being what ... witty? ... hypocritical? ... confused? ... one dry martini too many? ... or what?
He was referring to the natural world, which he believes is not random but has rules (much like the deism of many of America's Founding Fathers. They also used the word god, but were not talking about an imaginary sky fairy.
When you are forced to put up with a life time of Xtian BS some of it will stick just as when some atheist stubs his toe and says jesus h christ. he is NOT calling on gawd! But then David knows that, because being incredibly delusional does not mean stupid.
