It's the fifth day of May, and that means it's time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Many Americans think this a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, but it is not. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, where the Mexican army pulled off a surprising victory over the French forces. In the United States today, the holiday is mainly a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
I see it as a celebration of the character of this nation -- a nation made up of (and celebrating) many cultures. Cinco de Mayo is a happy and fun holiday, and that's the way it should be celebrated. In that spirit, I wish all my readers a happy, safe, and fun Cinco de Mayo holiday!
